3/12 King of Battle

Some of our friends and family have asked What does Troy actually DO? Well, saying he is a Marine is a generalization. Most people familiar with the military will quickly ask What is his MOS? (In civilian talk: What is his job title?)
Troy is a field artillery officer. In civilian terms, this means he shoots really big bullets out of really big guns. Every redneck boy's dream right?

You might be thinking: Does he do this everyday at work??
He wishes! No, he runs business around the office on a daily basis: planning training, disciplining trouble makers, and doing all of those Marine- like things I don't understand. When he leaves for training, (like right now) he actually gets to fulfill every little boy's dream and shoot all sorts of different bullets from those big guns.

There have been a few great articles about Troy's unit and what they are doing in Korea right now. Just thought some of you back home would like a small glimpse into the work that Troy is doing over there.

Here are some photos stolen from the unit Facebook page. Not a fan yet? Type 3/12 King of Battle into your Facebook search bar and hit "Like" to become part of the information jackpot.

Troy is not actually in any of these photos since he was with the first group to depart who set things up. This is the type of transportation he had to take on the way over, though. :)

FAQ's

What is 3/12?

3/12 is an abbreviation for Troy's unit. It can also be listed as 3d Battalion 12th Marines. Each artillery unit has a different number assigned to it, so 3/12 is essentially a way to say where he works and what job he does.

What do they say "King of Battle"?

It is sort of like a nickname for Field Artillerymen.
Some say this nickname roots from of the mass damage that can be caused by artillery at war. Others say it is because artillerymen are necessary to rule the battlefield.
The one I most prefer is that the King of Battle is no use without his Queen (much like in a Chess game, or our house ;)). The "Queens of Battle" are infantrymen who arm the front lines. They use artillery to help plan and implement effective attacks on their enemy.
Either way, it is a statement of pride for an artilleryman to claim he is "The King of Battle".

Okashi to Katei no kaiteki-sa: Candy and Comforts of Home

When Troy is gone, I have to check the mail way up on the base where he works. It takes about forty minutes to drive there, so I usually try to come up with an adventure to accompany the trek. My favorite is stopping at the beach along the way with the dogs. Today, that is just what my two BFF's and I did.
Chesty is so photogenic! :)

Murphy is awkward just like his Momma, though!
After the beach, we proceeded to get three packages at the post office. That is pretty exciting considering we usually have junk mail or an empty box. One box was for a friend, but the other two were a jackpot of goodies! Momma Walton and Aunt Donna were the thoughtful senders who made my day. The boxes were filled with everything from chocolate dipped fortune cookies to ladybug socks. Enjoy some pics of our loot!
Side Note: The blog is rotating my photos all out of whack and I can't seem to fix it. Have fun getting a neck workout!
Lots of calorie packed goodies!

The two cutest cookies ever...upside down!

I got so many Easter kitchen towels that I couldn't choose just one! Easter is too short, so I have to display them all. :)

My absolute favorite thing about holidays... window clings. I seriously love them and wish they could stay up all year. :)

The cutest bunny cheese knife!

Two really cute notepads.

Go Green! Love some recyclable bags!

A taste of home- some shirts from Louisville. Troy will be very excited about these!
Spending holidays without family is probably the toughest thing about being halfway around the world. Traditions are missed and new ones are hard to make with the hectic schedule Troy keeps on island and off. Knowing that everyone back home is thinking about us helps ease the pain and bring back positive memories, I am so thankful for that!

The very best part of Momma W's package was a collection of handwritten notes from friends and family back home. I was literally brought to tears at the planning and kindness everyone put into the collection of love and thoughts sent our way.
Thank you all SO much. I wish you knew how much this means to us! I can not wait to show Troy when he gets home.

Shout Outs to our Easter well- wishers:
Papaw Don, Howard, Alice & Karl, Joan, Grandma Laverne, Denise, Betty & Oz, Bo & Margie, Sayed, The Meredith's, Kathy, and The Mercer's.. Thank you for your well wishes and love!

Sherrin- We are so sad to miss thunder, can't wait until we can be there again!
Hunter- Troy still refuses to eat raw fish. ;)
Donna- July 13th can't come quickly enough! Thanks for making my day!!
Mary Louise and Ray- I will save all the M&M's for Troy's return!
Momma Walton- Such a thoughtful and awesome idea. I am so thankful to have you in my life!
Last but not least...
Ellie- The tickle monster can not wait to tickle you!! Chesty and Murphy send big, wet kisses!

Hoppy Early Easter!

Playing Catch-Up!

If you have been following along, you may have noticed my post about the article I wrote for Okinawa Hai! recently. In the past week, I had two more articles published on the site about how we celebrated our anniversary. I thought the folks back home might want to check them out!

I just got back from Hawaii and Troy is in Korea doing some training right now. Once I manage to steal a few photos from my partner in Hawaiian crime you can expect an exciting blog on that adventure.

For now, enjoy a few catch-up pictures from Troy's (work) trip to Thailand in February.
Troy was able to attend a yearly event called Cobra Gold where Marines from the US, Thailand, and Korea all train together to promote peace-keeping and international relationships. There are many different types of exercises done at Cobra Gold, and Troy was able to participate in the jungle survival aspect.

Don't worry, they had rice so he survived. :)

Troy is a softy for animals and had many photos of the homeless dogs he gave his leftover food to each day. I was surprised one didn't come home in his sea bag.

Beautiful beaches, but they weren't allowed in the water!

I miss my Marine!

He was obviously working hard the entire time...

I would have asked for a one-way ticket back to Okinawa after I saw the facilities.

They were in rural Thailand, with a great view of the mountains.

Troy in front of his sleeping quarters.

The mosquito net he slept in each night, it doesn't even look long enough for his tall body!

The gigantic bugs!

They spent lots of time shooting guns...

... and learning how to survive off the land.

They chopped the head off of this live Cobra and drank the blood! (Troy did not partake.)

Troy and his buddies with some of the Thai Marines.

They received one day of liberty (a day off to explore the surroundings) and took advantage by visiting some elephants!

Troy got to feed them baby bananas.

Overall, Thailand was another adventure thanks to Okinawa!
